Altitude sickness hit us during our July vacation in Denver while visiting my son. My fiancé stayed home due to altitude sickness, while I walked with my son and his girlfriend to a great Farmer’s Market. It was a glorious sunny day and good exercise. I thought maybe we should be healing altitude sickness with herbs and supplements.
My fiancé had a lot of trouble with altitude sickness and could ride in the car, but could not tolerate much walking at all. Poor thing, he did a lot of watching TV and sleeping while we were at my son’s. He has COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) that is fairly stable, but he needed help. I had some altitude sickness as well, but tolerated walking on flat ground and not so much hiking uphill. If I stopped to catch my breath and drink water, I go keep walking.
The best thing for immediate relief was the portable oxygen.
So, I found natural supplements at Whole Foods that seemed to help some. We drank lots of water. We both took herbs and supplements of ginkgo biloba, Choro Oxygen (greens), ginger crystals, and CoQ10. A also found a supplement containing ginseng, rhodolia, schizandra, & ashwaganda- all adaptogens. We took our regular multivitamin pill and extra 500-100mg of Vit. C that I thought could also be of benefit.
The best thing was the portable oxygen I found at Sports Authority. I think it was a 20 ounce O2 (oxygen) can for $15, a good deal. Every time we felt short of breath, we took a hit of the nearly 100% O2! Finally, my fiancé felt so much better and I felt better for helping him. I took a few breaths of the O2 when at a high altitude and too much exertion. I definitely recommend the portable O2.
Altitude sickness is not fun and can ruin a perfectly good vacation. If you need supplements or oxygen, I hope this blog helps you.
